Obama Met With Richardson Today Concerning Secretary of State Position

Not surprisingly, Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) met with President-elect Obama (D) today in Chicago to discuss the Secretary of State position. Presumably, Richardson is the likely candidate if Hillary Clinton (D) says no and the person I have long predicted would be tapped for the slot in an Obama Administration. No doubt, the job is now Clinton’s for the taking…but will she?

Democratic officials say President-elect Barack Obama is considering former primary election rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Richardson to be his secretary of state. The officials said Obama met with Richardson Friday in Chicago, a day after meeting with Clinton.Richardson is the governor of New Mexico and has an extensive foreign policy resume. He was President Clinton’s ambassador to the United Nations and has conducted freelance diplomacy as governor in such hot spots as Sudan and North Korea.Both meetings were at Obama’s transition office in Chicago and kept secret until after they were over.

One more thought: Obama met with Hillary on Thursday and Richardson on Friday to discuss the Secretary of State position. Earlier this week, the media noted that Obama wants to name his top three cabinet choices — Treasury, State, and Defense — at the same time. On Monday, Obama will meet with John McCain (R).

Does anyone else really think this is not going to be a very substantive conversation? Is Obama going to offer McCain the post of Secretary of Defense? I’m not predicting it, but I have a feeling there’s going to be major news coming out of that meeting, and not simply because the two rivals are meeting for the first time since the election.
